Recovery Is Happening Here: How Hygea Health Is Changing Lives in Maryland This National Recovery Month

Every September, something powerful happens across America. Communities gather. Stories are shared. Stigma is challenged. And millions of people who have walked the difficult road of addiction recovery are celebrated for the courage it took to choose a different life.

This is National Recovery Month — an annual observance established by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in 1989 to promote evidence-based treatment, celebrate the recovery community, and honor the service providers who make healing possible.

The 2026 theme, “Recovery. Hope. Healing.”, resonates deeply with everything we do at Hygea Health. Because for us, those aren’t just words on a poster. They are the daily reality of the work happening across our three Maryland locations — in Middle River, Bel Air, and Camp Meade — every single day of the year.

This September, we’re pulling back the curtain. We’re sharing the numbers, the stories, and the data that reflect what Hygea Health has built in the Maryland community since we opened our doors. Because we believe that transparency is part of our mission — and that the people of Maryland deserve to know that help is here, it is working, and it is closer than they think.

The Scale of the Crisis We’re Responding To

Before we talk about our impact, it’s important to understand the landscape we’re operating in — because the need for what Hygea Health provides is not abstract. It is urgent, documented, and deeply local.

<cite index=”11-1″>According to the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 48.4 million Americans aged 12 or older — 16.8% of the population — met criteria for a substance use disorder in the past year. That’s not a distant statistic. That’s roughly one in six people. Colleagues. Neighbors. Family members.

Here in Maryland, the picture is equally sobering. <cite index=”15-1″>State data has found that over 1 million Marylanders have been recorded as having a substance use disorder, with 692,000 having an alcohol use disorder and 153,000 diagnosed with an opioid use disorder. Maryland’s proximity to major urban corridors and its long-standing struggle with fentanyl and synthetic opioids has made accessible, high-quality addiction treatment not a luxury — but a public health necessity.

And yet, the good news — the news we want to shout from every rooftop this Recovery Month — is this: <cite index=”11-1″>according to SAMHSA’s most recent data, 74.3% of those who perceived they ever had a problem with drugs or alcohol considered themselves to be in recovery or to have recovered.

Recovery is not rare. Recovery is happening. And at Hygea Health, we are part of making it happen every day.

By the Numbers: Hygea Health’s Community Impact Since Opening

We believe in data-driven care. That means we don’t just treat patients — we track outcomes, measure reach, and hold ourselves accountable to the community we serve. This Recovery Month, here is what that accountability looks like:

2,030+ Unique Clients Treated

Since opening, Hygea Health has welcomed more than 2,030 unique individuals through our doors across our three Maryland locations. These are people who made the call, showed up, and committed to their recovery journey — many of them for the first time.

Behind that number are mothers, fathers, veterans, young adults, and professionals from every corner of Maryland. Each one came to us in a moment of vulnerability. Each one deserved — and received — compassionate, evidence-based care.

Our total admission records stand at 3,029 — reflecting the reality that recovery is often a process, not a single event. Some of our clients have returned for additional levels of care, which we honor without judgment as part of the complex, non-linear journey that addiction recovery truly is.

73,053 Google Profile Views

Before someone walks through our doors, they search. They look up “detox near me” or “rehab in Maryland” or simply “Hygea Health” — and they find us. Since opening, our Google Business Profiles across Middle River, Bel Air, and Camp Meade have been viewed 73,053 times.

Each one of those views represents a person at a crossroads — someone looking for a reason to reach out. We take that responsibility seriously. Every piece of content we publish, every response we write to a review, and every update we make to our profiles is done with that searching person in mind.

7,351 Phone Calls Answered

This is the number that means the most to our team: 7,351 phone calls. That’s 7,351 times someone picked up the phone — often the hardest call they’ve ever made — and we answered.

At Hygea Health, we maintain 24/7 availability because addiction doesn’t follow business hours. A person in crisis at 2 a.m. on a Sunday deserves the same access as someone calling at noon on a Tuesday. Every call we answer is a potential turning point in someone’s life.

117 Google Reviews — Average Rating 4.6 Stars

Word of mouth has always been powerful in behavioral health. People seek out treatment facilities that others in their community trust — and our 117 Google reviews with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars across all three locations reflect the standard of care our team delivers every day.

Reviews like “This place is amazing — the staff is great and the food is amazing,” and “They really are about recovery… I will never use again because of the great people here,” tell us that what we’re building at Hygea Health is working. Not just clinically — but humanly.

We invite you to read our reviews and see what our community is saying.

2,374 Direction Requests

2,374 times, someone opened Google Maps and asked for directions to a Hygea Health facility. That is a profound act. It means they had already decided — at least in that moment — to try. To go. To show up.

We don’t take that lightly. Which is why the physical accessibility of our locations across Maryland is not an afterthought — it is a core part of our mission.

Three Locations. One Mission.

One of the most significant barriers to addiction treatment is geography. When someone is in crisis, a 45-minute drive can feel like an impossible obstacle. That’s why Hygea Health operates three strategically located facilities across Maryland:

Together, these three locations allow us to reach Marylanders across a broad geographic and demographic range. Whether someone is in the suburbs of Baltimore or the communities of Harford County, Hygea Health is within reach.

Each location offers the same high standard of care: medically supervised detoxification, residential treatment, individualized clinical programming, peer recovery support, and case management services to ensure every client leaves with a clear aftercare plan.

We accept Medicaid and most major insurance plans, because we believe that financial barriers should never stand between a person and the care they need. To learn more about our services or to verify your insurance, visit our website or call us directly at 410-512-9525.

What Recovery Month Means to Our Team

For the clinicians, nurses, counselors, case managers, and support staff at Hygea Health, National Recovery Month is not just an awareness campaign. It is a personal affirmation of the work they show up for every single day.

Our staff includes people who have dedicated their careers to behavioral health — and many who carry their own experience with addiction and recovery. That lived experience is not incidental to our model of care. It is central to it. When a client is struggling at 3 a.m., they are met by someone who understands — not just clinically, but humanly — what that struggle feels like.

Recovery Month gives us the opportunity to celebrate not just our clients’ journeys, but the extraordinary people who walk alongside them. To every member of the Hygea Health team: thank you. What you do matters more than words can express.

The Evidence Is Clear: Treatment Works

One of the most persistent myths about addiction is that it is untreatable — that people who struggle with substance use disorders are somehow beyond help. National Recovery Month exists, in part, to dismantle that myth with data.

<cite index=”10-1″>Among people aged 12 or older who were classified as needing substance use treatment, about 1 in 4 (23.6%) received substance use treatment in the past year — and among adults who perceived they ever had a substance use problem, 73.1% considered themselves to be in recovery or to have recovered.

Treatment works. The science is clear. The stories of our 2,030+ clients confirm it. <cite index=”5-1″>With effective prevention efforts, appropriate treatment, support, and resources, people can and do recover.

What this data also tells us is that the gap between need and access remains significant. Fewer than one in four people who need treatment actually receive it. That gap is why Hygea Health exists — and why we continue to expand our reach, refine our programming, and advocate for accessible behavioral health care across Maryland.

Looking Ahead: Recovery Is a Movement

As we enter this September, we are proud of what we have built — and clear-eyed about how much work remains. <cite index=”15-1″>Over 1 million Marylanders have been identified as having a substance use disorder, and the majority of them have not yet accessed treatment. Every Google search, every unanswered craving, every moment of quiet desperation represents a person who could be sitting in one of our facilities — beginning their story of recovery.

That is the work ahead of us. And we are ready for it.

This Recovery Month, we ask you to join us — not just as a facility, but as a community. Share this post with someone who might need to see it. Leave a review if Hygea Health has impacted your life or the life of someone you love. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn as we share stories, data, and resources throughout the month.

Because recovery is not a moment. It is a movement. And it is happening right here in Maryland.
